Rimsky-Korsakov enriched his fantastic opera with mythological elements. Based on Nikolai V. Gogol’s story The Night Before Christmas, the universe of this satirical, crazy opera includes hypocritical officials and dignitaries, witches, devils, spirits of the air and sun gods. Christof Loy, well-known director of Korngold’s The Miracle of Heliane and Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini directs Rimsky-Korsakov’s rarely-performed opera.
