4 - Cranko

In 1960, John Cranko arrived in Stuttgart as a gay guest choreographer. Having been marginalised in London, he finally found recognition there. He quickly became ballet director and devoted himself passionately to his art and the company, referring to them as 'my children'. Despite personal crises, he led the 'Stuttgart Ballet Miracle' to world fame. Cranko died unexpectedly young in 1973 on the return flight from a US tour, but his legacy lives on through his work.
