La Bohème is at the same time the first opera film shot in the studio, the first music film directed by Herbert von Karajan and Franco Zeffirelli's first major film production - based on his direction at La Scala in Milan with Mirella Freni and Gianni Raimondi as unhappy lovers in their celebrated opera debut. The film in the ARTE series Sternstunden der Musik revisits the making of the production and focuses on the enduring fascination of the opera film as well as Zeffirelli's personality.
