The knight and freedom fighter Guercoeur dies young and ends up in heaven. Since he cannot resign himself to his fate, he is allowed to return to earth to find Giselle, his beloved, and his friend Heurtal. But he is sorely disappointed: Giselle and the people have been seduced by Heurtal, who has become a tyrant, and Guercoeur dies a second time.
