In Finland today, a marriage is like many others in our cosmopolitan cities. The fiancé is Finnish, the bride is Romanian, the French mother-in-law. But during the banquet, the Czech waitress feels terrible. The ghosts of a collective drama revive their memory. Kaija Saariaho’s new opera is the occasion for an unprecedented encounter between the composer and a Finnish artist, the novelist Sofi Oksanen. Innocence is a contemporary tragedy made incandescent by powerful music and words that stir.
