With Armenia under Roman rule and Christianity forbidden, the Armenian-Christians are driven to the depths of the catacombs in order to receive the sacraments. Here, Polyeucte, the son-in-law of the governor Felix, is baptised, risking martyrdom. His wife Pauline, stumbles across the ceremony. The rules tighten and baptised Christians face the death penalty. As evidence for the baptism surfaces, Polyeucte confesses and is arrested. Pauline must make a decision about both her love-life and religion.
