In 1979, in the pioneering days of video technology, Hans van Manen created a masterful conundrum about the mechanisms of perception: a woman, all alone on the big stage, with her back turned towards us. A camera lying on the floor is pointed at her feet. A man joins her, picks up the camera and lets it roam over the audience. Thrown onto a giant screen, we become the protagonists of this piece, which finally opens out into the foyer of the State Opera and out into the Viennese night.
