A Greek National Opera landmark, The Murderess is an opera by Giorgos Koumendakis. The libretto is based on the novel by Alexandros Papadiamantis and is a darkly beautiful tale of crime and punishment. Vassilis Christopoulos conducts and mezzo soprano Mary-Ellen Nesi stars in the exceptionally demanding title role. The music is tonal and deeply melodic and conceals its complexity beneath a subtle seductiveness. Alexander Efklidis’s staging does full justice to a haunting work of immense power.
