Following the passing of dancer and choreographer Rudolf Nureyev, who died of AIDS in 1993, his personal effects were sold at auction. This offered an opportunity to revisit the tumultuous destiny of an indomitable genius who passionately defied convention: from his beginnings in the Soviet Union to his spectacular defection to the West in 1961, not to mention the indelible mark he left on his art—as a performer for the world’s greatest companies, and as the director of the Paris Opera Ballet.
