Following Rudolf Nureyev’s death in 1993, the dancer and choreographer’s personal effects were offered at auction. This provides a starting point for a look back at the turbulent life of an indomitable genius who passionately defied convention. The documentary traces Nureyev’s journey from his artistic beginnings in the Soviet Union and his dramatic defection to the West in 1961 to his dazzling international career. As a dancer with some of the world’s leading companies and later director of the Paris Opera Ballet, he left an indelible mark on the history of ballet.
