We’ve all heard of them before, the great stars of the opera world; from Anna Netrebko to Cecilia Bartoli, from Jonas Kaufmann to Rolando Villazon. They all had to start from scratch; at some point they studied their métier before claiming their place on the stages of some of the world’s most renowned opera houses and concert halls. But how did they get there? What does it take to become an opera star? Why do some make it, whilst others do not? Stefan Braunshausen has looked for answers.
