Mahler was 28 years old when he began his Symphony Resurrection, 34 when he finished it. It took this time to compose such a gigantic score, which starts from a grandiose funeral and goes through various episodes of earthly life to lead the listener on the way to resurrection. A vast existential and metaphysical poem, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, subtitled Resurrection, confronts, with all the Mahlerian expressive fever, the question of finiteness and the hope of a second life.
