Special screening of the new documentary Peter Brook: Showman and Shaman about one of the most influential theatre and film directors of the post-war era. The film will be personally presented by its director Reiner Moritz from Poorhouse International.
Peter Brook was a visionary who fundamentally transformed theatrical art – from working with British stars like Olivier and Gielgud at the Royal Shakespeare Company to experimental political theatre inspired by Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty. His legendary production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in an empty white cube, or the monumental nine-hour Mahabharata that traveled from an abandoned quarry in Avignon to stages worldwide, forever changed our understanding of theatrical possibilities.
A director who never feared crossing boundaries, Brook founded the International Centre for Theatre Research in Paris and continued seeking new ways to communicate with audiences across cultures and traditions until the end of his life. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 97. This documentary portrait, created for his centenary, draws on unique family archives and precious footage shot by Brook's son Simon.
The screening will be in English with subtitles.
