The film Breaking Bach: Bach Reimagined was created as a direct result of the residency of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment at Acland Burghley School in North London’s Camden district, which brings together a number of talented young dancers. Choreographer Kim Brandstrup and orchestra director Crispin Woodhead created a project that connects the music of Johann Sebastian Bach with the energy of hip hop and street dance.
The film follows the creation of a dance work that breaks genre boundaries and places young dancers in the role of equal creators. Bach’s rhythms gain new dynamism here in contrast with the raw energy of street dance—from the Double Violin Concerto to the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and movements from the solo cello suites. The result is a powerful fusion of classical and contemporary styles, which premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival. The film, directed by Zen Grisdale and Kim Brandstrup, was shot in 4K quality.
